Athlone Edmonton Real Estate

Located in north west Edmonton is the residential neighbourhood of Athlone. The western part of the neighbourhood is also called Dunvegan. The neighbourhood of Athlone was named after the Earl of Athlone, who was Canada’s Governor-General from 1940 to 1946. According to the 2001 federal census, the residential development in Athlone began before the end of World War II. At that time, approximately 1 out of every 15 of all residences were constructed. In Athlone, most of the residential development happened between the end of WWII and 1970. During that time, a little over half of all residences were constructed (56.1%). Very little residential construction happened between 1970 and 1990. Development picked up again in the 1990s with 1 in every 3 of all residences being built.

The most common residence type in Athlone is single-family dwelling, according to the 2005 municipal census. These residences account for 80.2% of all the residences in the neighbourhood, row houses account for 14.9% and the majority of the remaining residences are duplexes. A total of 73% of all residences are owner-occupied, and 27% are rented.

The 3 neighbourhood schools are as follows: Athlone Elementary School and Wellington Junior High School, which are both operated by the Edmonton Public School System, and Sir John Thompson Catholic Junior High School, operated by the Edmonton Catholic School System.
